Job scammers jailed

December 12, 2013
Five Hong Kong residents, including an employment agency licensee, were sentenced to three to 15 months imprisonment today for a bogus employment scheme.

The District Court heard that the offenders used false instruments to apply for foreign domestic helper working visas.

The 26-year-old agent solicited people to pose as employers in exchange for money, and produced false proof of salary and residence when applying for the visas. Another offender’s case was adjourned to December 30 for sentencing.

A total of 19 Filipinos and an Indonesian involved in the case had been convicted earlier at the Magistrates' Courts for making false representations to an immigration officer.

The Immigration Department reminded the public that it is an offence to make false representation to an immigration officer, and reminded domestic helpers not to take up employment without the Director of Immigration's approval.
