Security chief: Snowden case confidential

Secretary for Security TK Lai says the Edward Snowden case is highly complicated, and said he hoped the public would understand the administration cannot disclose or discuss any details of the case. 
 
In a reply to the lawmakers today, Mr Lai said the Government, the industry and all stakeholders should stay highly alert to ensure network security, a matter the whole community should be concerned with. 
 
The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and Police have worked to promote the importance of protecting computer systems and network security, to combat technology crimes. The office has taken precautionary steps from monitoring firewalls to conducting daily checks for intrusion, to protect government networks.
 
“The administration is also very concerned about recent media reports which alleged that local computer systems had been hacked. The departments concerned have already taken immediate actions to review the relevant information security arrangements,” he added.
 
Mr Lai said the Government will continue to investigate network security incidents, including any intrusions on the rights of institutions or individuals in Hong Kong.
 
He said the Government will handle the Edward Snowden case strictly in accordance with the law and procedures of Hong Kong.
 
“However, we cannot disclose any details of the operations that we have taken or will be taking. In addition, the Police are committed to protecting the safety of the people in Hong Kong.  Any person who considers that his/her life is at risk may seek help from the Police,” he said.
