LED replacement scheme to be launched

April 26, 2017

The Highways Department will replace the high pressure sodium road lights with LED ones.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung made the statement to legislators today, saying since 2009, the department has been installing LED lights in different places as trials.

The department reported they perform well in terms of energy saving, colour rendering and reliability.

The trial on road sign lighting in 2015 saw LED lights produce more uniform illumination, and use 70% less energy than existing floodlights.

The trial on subway lights conducted in 2015 and 2016 yielded energy savings of 20% compared with traditional T8 fluorescent tubes.

Taking into account the life expectancy of existing road lamps, the department will launch the light replacement programme progressively, starting from the current financial year.

Medium- and low-wattage high pressure sodium lamps for footpaths and cycle tracks will be replaced with LED lights.

LED lights will also be installed on 4,500 gantry signs and roadside floodlights in the coming five years.
