Lease enforcement stepped up

July 28, 2016

Secretary for Development Paul Chan says the Government has tightened enforcement against lease breaches in industrial buildings to safeguard public safety.

He told reporters today the Buildings Department has inspected about 100 industrial buildings and 29 prosecutions are being processed.

More than 160 notices have also been issued ordering landlords to rectify illegal structures.

"Taking stock of the experience of the effect of the enforcement, we think there are a number of areas we can further strengthen, for example, criminalising operators of sub-divided residential flats in industrial buildings."

Another possible action is to allow Buildings Department officers to enter sub-divided units to gather evidence, he added.
