Paul Chan speaks on development

June 03, 2015

Secretary for Development Paul Chan briefed a delegation from Hunan today on new town planning and development in Hong Kong.

He told participants the city's development model maximises the use of limited land resources, noting the developed area accounts for only a quarter of Hong Kong’s overall land area.

The city's nine new towns accommodate nearly half the population and meet society’s different needs, including convenient transport, he said.

About 40% of households and the working population, and 75% of commercial and office floor space, are located within 500 metres of railway stations.

He said the Government will continue to emphasise sustainable development, low-carbon environmental protection, people-oriented development and quality urban design.

The delegation also visited new town areas at Tsing Yi and Tung Chung where officials briefed them on new town planning and design concepts, features and developments.
