Flood prevention works primed

March 26, 2015

The first phase of the Happy Valley underground stormwater storage scheme has been completed and will be commissioned soon, the Drainage Services Department said today.

The scheme alleviates flood risks in the vicinity of Happy Valley and Wan Chai, particularly at the junction of Morrison Hill Road and Lap Tak Lane.

The whole project will cost about $1.07 billion, and includes the construction of an underground storage tank with a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres - about the size of 24 standard swimming pools, a stormwater pumping station, about a kilometre of connection drains, and associated greening and landscaping works.

The works began in September 2012 and the whole project is expected to be completed before the wet season in 2018.

The department is also reviewing other districts' drainage master plans to assess flood risks and plan improvement measures.
