MTRC upgrades welcomed

December 11, 2014

The Government has welcomed the Mass Transit Railway Corporation's plan to improve its measures and staff training to deal with on-track incidents.

The MTRC released its report today on the stray dog incident on the East Rail Line on August 20.

It included suggestions on better dealing with similar incidents in future.

Its three main recommendations include strengthening boundary fencing along the railway line, enhancing training for frontline staff, and adopting a more prudent approach when a dog is reported or confirmed to be in the track area.

Train services may have to be slowed or stopped.

The company will also ask the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to provide assistance if necessary.

The Government called on the MTRC to give due consideration to the safety of animals while maintaining a safe and reliable train service.
