Antique well to be relocated

December 08, 2014

One of the antique wells found in the Sha Tin-Central Rail link construction site will be dismantled and relocated.

Secretary for Development Paul Chan announced the Antiquities Advisory Board recommendation today.

He said the Government compared different conservation proposals, and studied heritage value, engineering risk, and the impact on the link's progress.

The board discussed the different options last week and supported the dismantle-and-relocate proposal, which provides more flexibility in displaying and interpreting the monument, while retaining most of the heritage value of the well.

During dismantling, the well’s structure and construction methods can also be better studied so that a cross section of the well can be displayed to enhance public knowledge of the relic.

The Mass Transit Railway Corporation has estimated the project will cost $10 million, Mr Chan added.
