Drivers urged to watch for cyclists

December 13, 2013
Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung today encouraged professional drivers to watch out for cyclists and pedestrians.

Speaking at a ceremony in support of the Safe Driving and Health Campaign today, Prof Cheung called on drivers to observe good driving behaviour, not drive after drinking and taking drugs, be aware of health conditions, and respect and be alert to other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

He noted that cycling has become increasingly popular, and appealed to motorists and cyclists to always pay attention to road conditions, and give way to one another so as to avoid traffic accidents.

On combating drink driving and drug driving, he said the legislative amendments introduced in 2010 and in mid-March last year have started to produce results.

Noting Police are empowered to conduct random breath tests and preliminary drug tests on drivers, he said Police will continue to take stringent action to safeguard road users' safety.

This is the fifth consecutive year the Transport Department has organised the road safety campaign focusing on commercial vehicle drivers.
