Toll adjustment

Toll adjustment:  Secretary for Transport & Housing Anthony Cheung launches the public consultation on three proposals to improve traffic distribution among Hong Kong's three harbour tunnels.

Tunnel traffic consultation starts

February 08, 2013
Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung has launched a public consultation on three proposals to improve traffic distribution among Hong Kong's three harbour tunnels.

He told the media today that in the first option, the fee charged on private cars will fall by $5 for the Eastern Harbour Crossing, and rise by $5 for the Cross-Harbour Tunnel.

He said the move would cut Cross-Harbour Tunnel traffic by 40%.

The second option involves reducing the Eastern Harbour Crossing private car toll by $5, and increasing the Cross-Harbour Tunnel private car toll by $5, and tolls for other vehicles at both tunnels will be proportionally adjusted.

He said this would cut 30% of the queue at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel during rush hours.

The third option has been developed taking into account views received during the last consultation on the issue. Public transport vehicles, including buses, minibuses, and taxis, will not be affected.

In this option, the toll for private cars at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel will rise by $10, while that at the Eastern Harbour Crossing will fall by $5.

He said this would cut 38% of the queue at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel during rush hours.

The consultation will close on May 7. Click here for details.
