HK airport to become world's greenest
May 08, 2012
The Airport Authority and 40 of its business partners have pledged to make Hong Kong's airport the world’s greenest, the first commitment of its kind worldwide.
Officiating at the pledge ceremony with airport officials today, Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng hailed the move.
"The pledge made today showed the Airport Authority’s determination in environmental conservation during operation and development of the airport.”
The authority said it achieved a 10% reduction in carbon intensity last year, which is on track with its goal pledged in 2010 to lower the airport’s carbon intensity by 25% from 2008 emission levels, by 2015.
The airport community conducted more than 300 green initiatives to achieve the 10% reduction, including installing LEDs, improving chiller systems, introducing more energy-efficient vehicles, and launching environmental educational programmes.
LSG Sky Chefs, Gate Gourmet and the Asia Airfreight Terminal Company were presented with Most Effective Carbon Reduction gold, silver and bronze awards for outstanding achievements in carbon reduction.
