November 30, 2017

The Government today announced the establishment of the Steering Committee on Genomic Medicine, which will be chaired by Prof Raymond Liang.

An initiative in the 2017 Policy Address, the committee will lead the study of strategies for developing genomic medicine to harness the potential of new technology for better public health policies and clinical outcomes.

It comprises representatives from academia, professional bodies and genomic medicine experts.

Their appointments will start from tomorrow and expire upon the committee's submission of its recommendations to the Government.

Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan welcomed the establishment of the steering committee.

She said she looks forward to its advice to enable Hong Kong to forge ahead with the development of genomic medicine to meet healthcare needs for generations to come.

The committee will focus on disease-based and prenatal screening, disease management, capacity building and education. It will also review regulatory and ethical issues surrounding genomic applications.
