Volunteer vocation:  Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah commends Service Corps volunteers for their work in Guangdong.

Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung has commended Service Corps volunteers for their work in Shaoguan and Meizhou in Guangdong.

Twenty volunteers were sent to primary and secondary schools in the towns to provide teaching assistance to preschool, primary and junior secondary students, and to help organise extracurricular activities from September last year until last month.

Mr Cheung presented them with completion-of-service certificates today.

Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah praised the volunteers for their efforts.

"The most praiseworthy thing is that the young delegates from Hong Kong could adapt to a simple rural life. It was not easy for them to live there for half a year or even a year and experience a lifestyle that is quite different from Hong Kong's."

He urged the delegates to share their experiences with friends to encourage more young people to take part in voluntary services on the Mainland.

About 120 youths have participated in the first seven phases of the programme since its launch in 2011, which provides financial support for people aged 18 to 29 to serve in remote Mainland areas.
