Seasonal flu outbreaks subside

August 09, 2017

The number of seasonal influenza outbreaks and admissions to public hospitals has declined in recent weeks.

The Centre for Health Protection made the revelation today, saying the percentage of positive respiratory specimens it received peaked at 41% in the week of July 9 and dropped from 36% two weeks later to 25% last week.

During the same period, the number of institutional influenza outbreaks decreased from 39 to 15.

There were three cases recorded over the past week.

The number of daily influenza patients admitted to public hospitals peaked at 350 cases in the week between July 11 and 17.

The figure has dropped to 135 over the past week.

From May 5 to yesterday there were 474 severe adult influenza cases, leading to 337 deaths.

For children, there were 19 severe influenza cases, causing three deaths.

The centre expects influenza viruses to remain active for some time, and urged the public to take precautionary measures.
