Community mosquito control urged

August 05, 2017

Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan said the Government will spare no effort in implementing mosquito control, but it is equally important for the whole community to help prevent mosquito breeding.

Speaking to the media today, Prof Chan said she is concerned about the latest local case of Japanese encephalitis involving a 59-year-old Tin Shui Wai man.

Follow-up measures have been carried out, including a new round of mosquito control in the district this morning.

Prof Chan added people’s awareness of the importance to do their part is key to effective mosquito control.

“The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department and the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department have already entered the pig farms to do surveillance as well as advised pig farmers on mosquito control measures.

“So I think this is not only the pig farms or a matter of legislation, it requires everybody including people who are living at homes and people who are working at construction sites and other places that are at risk of having mosquitoes (to adopt mosquito control measures).”
