The Centre for Food Safety has found excessive benzoic acid in a canned soft drink.
A sample of 7UP Cherry, from the US, was recently tested under the centre’s routine food surveillance system.
The vendor concerned, notified of the irregularity, has stopped selling and removed from shelves the product as instructed.
The centre is tracing the source of the affected product.
Noting that benzoic acid is a commonly used preservative in soft drinks, it said the level of it detected in the sample will not have adverse health effects under usual consumption.
