Poultry bans imposed

December 28, 2016

The Centre for Food Safety banned the import of poultry meat and eggs today from areas in Japan, Poland and Xinjiang.

It was notified of an H5N6 sub-type avian influenza outbreak in the Yining City of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang.

The outbreak does not affect any registered Mainland poultry farms or registered poultry meat processing plants exporting to Hong Kong.

The centre has also banned the import of poultry meat and eggs from Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan as well as Miechowski and Proszowicki Counties in Poland due to an outbreak of avian influenza there.

Six-thousand tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 40.6 million poultry eggs were imported from Japan in the first 10 months of this year.

And 16,400 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 4.8 million poultry eggs were imported from Poland during the same period.

The centre is liaising with Mainland as well as the Japanese and Polish authorities.

It will monitor the information issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health.
