Mosquito control to increase

September 07, 2016

The Government will boost mosquito control measures citywide due to the recent Dengue fever infections in Central.

Speaking to the media today Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said all three recent local Dengue fever cases occurred in Central.

Although the most recent case is not directly linked with the previous two, all three belong to Dengue serotype 3.

He warned against assuming only Central is affected by Dengue fever, as mosquitoes can transmit the virus once they are infected.

People all over Hong Kong should take preventive measures against mosquito bites, he said.

"Hong Kong is a place where the weather and humidity conditions are suitable for mosquito breeding. We cannot assume that we can totally eradicate mosquitoes in Hong Kong.

"We have to continue with our vigilance and surveillance as well as mosquito control efforts in the hope we would not have a sustained local transmission of Dengue fever as well as Zika virus."

Meanwhile, Centre for Health Protection Controller Leung Ting-hung chaired the Interdepartmental Co-ordinating Committee on Mosquito-borne Diseases meeting today.

He urged people who have been around the area in Central where Dengue was contracted to call the centre’s hotline 2125 2266 for laboratory investigation.

People should also report mosquito problems to the Government on 1823.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will increase surveillance on the monthly ovitrap index to twice a month in areas with confirmed Dengue or Zika cases, as well as those indexes over 20% for two consecutive months.
