Gov't caring for lead children

June 01, 2016

The Department of Health will take appropriate measures to care for children with elevated lead level in the blood who have shown some signs of developmental delay.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man made the statement today in response to criticism of the Government’s work to follow up on the cases.

He said the department has kept monitoring their situation but each child’s circumstances is different.

He assured that appropriate measures would be taken to care for them.

Commenting on whether to introduce healthcare vouchers for children to visit private doctors, Dr Ko said he will examine the possibility of providing more services at public hospitals.

Noting that there are many opinions on improving healthcare vouchers for the elderly, he said priority should be given to studying voucher options rather than immediately launching another voucher for a new group of patients, such as children.

He added that the Government is doing its best to promote breastfeeding and encouraged the private sector and public transport operators to provide more breastfeeding-friendly facilities.
