Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko-Wing-man says the Government will launch a publicity campaign to promote organ donation this year, working with non-governmental organisations to distribute organ donation forms to the public.
Dr Ko told reporters today that Hong Kong's organ donation rate is low due to traditional beliefs that people like to keep their body intact after death.
However, despite this culture, he said many Hong Kong people are now willing to become organ donors after years of promotion and education.
A convenient registration system coupled with a determined initiative in public promotion and education will help boost the donation rate, he added.
