10th Joyful Fruit Month held

April 30, 2016

The Department of Health's Joyful Fruit Month event is being held for the 10th time this year to encourage students to eat fruit daily for good health.

Trophies were awarded to 134 primary schools today for their participation in Joyful Fruit Month activities for the last 10 years.

Speaking at the ceremony, Under Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan said eating fruit helps prevent many diseases.

She said the World Health Organisation says consuming enough fruit and vegetables can lower the risk of strokes, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer.

The Joyful Fruit Month theme for this year is "Fruit - Your Perfect Buddy for Health".

About 70% of primary school and pre-primary institutions, and about 30% of secondary schools, have participated in the activity in recent years, benefitting 60% of students, Prof Chan added.
