Brilliant bookworms:  Junior secondary and senior primary category winners in the 4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition share their reading experiences at the prize presentation ceremony.

Outstanding young writers were awarded prizes for taking part in the 4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition during a Hong Kong Public Libraries presentation ceremony today.

The winning entries will be displayed at Hong Kong Central Library from tomorrow to May 11 and at a roving exhibition at 18 public libraries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Michelle Li said that in connection with this year’s Olympic Games in Brazil, the competition theme was "Healthy Body‧Healthy Mind" to encourage students to learn more about the importance of sport and learn from athletes' positive and fair play spirit through reading and writing.

The competition received an enthusiastic response with nearly 1,400 entries from more than 200 schools.

There were four competition categories: junior primary students designed postcard covers to introduce their favourite sport; senior primary students wrote letters to teachers or family members on a book about an athlete or a sport; junior secondary students wrote reports on what "Sportsmanship Means ..."; and senior secondary students wrote essays discussing how sport helps build a healthy body and develops meaningful lives.

The winners were awarded a $500 book coupon, a medal and a certificate, while their individual schools received a trophy.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation designated April 23 as World Book Day to promote reading worldwide. The Leisure & Cultural Services Department has hosted the World Book Day Creative Competition since 2004, adopting a different theme each year to broaden the scope of students' reading.
