Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man will hold a meeting with the Centre for Health Protection to determine if the Zika virus should be listed as a notifiable infectious disease.
The move comes after the World Health Organisation issued a warning about the virus.
Although it is believed to be transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitos, other species in Hong Kong may also be a vector of the virus so the Government must heighten awareness to the risk of transmission, he said.
Dr Ko also appealed to the public to get influenza vaccinations as Hong Kong is entering its peak flu season.
