Continued parental responsibility promoted

November 30, 2015
Duty bound

Duty bound:  The Social Welfare Department has launched a new set of announcements on parental responsibility.

The Social Welfare Department has launched a new set of television and radio announcements to promote the importance of continuing parental responsibility after separation or divorce.

It said Hong Kong has experienced a rising divorce rate in the past decade. The number of divorces rose from 6,295 in 1991 to 22,271 in 2013.

More parents and children are having to cope with the changes and impact brought by divorce and separation.

The announcements will remind people, especially separated or divorced parents, that it is beneficial to their children's development if both parents co-operate and participate in their children's upbringing.

The Government is conducting a public consultation to introduce a "parental responsibility model" through legislation to carry forward the recommendations of the Law Reform Commission on child custody and access.

The announcements will be broadcast from today. The television announcement can also be viewed on the department's website and the Information Services Department's YouTube channel.
