Welfare chief visits foster care unit

July 30, 2015

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung visited the Social Welfare Department Central Foster Care Unit today.

He was briefed on the unit's scope of services and operation, which includes recruitment and assessment of foster homes, provision of support to foster homes, and thematic talks.

He also met with a pair of foster parents to hear about their experience. Mr Cheung thanked them for caring for 51 needy children in the past 12 years.

He also encouraged the unit's staff to keep improving and developing the foster care service so children in need can have a stable growing environment.

The local foster care service is currently run by 11 NGOs with a total of 1,070 service places. As at the end of June, there were 935 registered foster families and 946 foster children in placement.
