'Colour' activities on hold

July 08, 2015

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says two public entertainment activities which proposed to use dyestuff or power will be postponed or cancelled.

Replying to lawmakers’ questions today, Dr Ko said AsiaWorld-Expo announced yesterday that a July event will be postponed while a December event will be cancelled.

Any one who wants to keep or use any place of public entertainment must apply to the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department for a licence, to ensure public safety and orderliness, he added.

Fire safety, building safety, electrical and mechanical equipment, ventilation, crowd management and hygiene will be assessed during the application.

If dyestuff or powder will be used, the Fire Services Department will ask the applicant to submit further information on the powder, for example a material safety data sheet containing details of its composition, and physical and chemical data regarding its toxicity, flammability and explosiveness.

The Department of Health will offer advice on the human health impact when invited, and the Government Laboratory will conduct tests and assessments to ascertain flammability and risks of potential health hazards.
