Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung announced today the 2015 southern hemisphere seasonal influenza vaccination programme will be expanded to cover people aged 80 or above from tomorrow.
He said the expansion will enable more seniors to receive free vaccinations from the Hospital Authority and designated Elderly Health Centres.
People aged 85 or above currently eligible will remain so after the expansion.
Since the programme launched on May 20, about 8,200 doses of vaccination have been administered by the centre and the Department of Health.
About 46,000 doses have been ordered by elderly-care homes and about 31,000 doses have been administered under the Residential Care Home Vaccination Programme since May 8.
Dr Leung said the Government hopes the expansion can better protect the elderly during the summer influenza season.
