More US poultry banned

May 12, 2015

The Centre for Food Safety today banned the import of poultry products, including eggs, from Whitley County, Indiana.

The ban was imposed after US authorities announced outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in the county.

The centre has contacted American authorities and will monitor developments.

About 267,000 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 530 million poultry eggs were imported to Hong Kong from the US last year.

Poultry products from Nahouri Province, Burkina Faso and Balikesir Province, Turkey, were also banned due to avian influenza outbreaks, but there was no poultry products imported from these countries to Hong Kong last year.
