The Centre for Food Safety today urged the public not to eat a batch of raw cow's milk cheese imported from France, as the product might be contaminated with listeria.
The product’s name is Saint Nectaire Fermier marketed under the brand Morin. Its lot number is 61C23NW01 and has a best before date of May 7, 2015.
The centre received a notification from the European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Food & Feed about the contamination, and noted that a small volume of the affected product has been imported into Hong Kong.
City Super Limited and The House of Fine Foods Limited have imported the product and taken it off the shelves and started a recall.
Listeria can be destroyed by cooking, but can survive and multiply when refrigerated. Most healthy people who eat listeria-contaminated foods will have only mild symptoms including fever, muscle pain, headache, nausea and stomach upset. It can cause severe complications in people with weaker immune systems, including newborns and the elderly.
