US, Dutch poultry banned

March 30, 2015

The Centre for Food Safety today banned the import of poultry meat and products, including eggs, from three areas of the US and one in the Netherlands due to avian influenza outbreaks.

US authorities reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in Stearns County and Lac Qui Parle County in Minnesota, and of low pathogenic avian influenza in Crawford County, Kansas.

The World Organisation for Animal Health reported outbreaks of low pathogenic H7 avian influenza in Friesland, the Netherlands.

Hong Kong imported 267,000 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 530 million poultry eggs from the US, and about 15,000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 12.3 million poultry eggs from the Netherlands, last year.

The centre has contacted US and Dutch authorities and will monitor the situation.
