Acupuncture death case probed

March 20, 2015

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says the sudden death of a patient during acupuncture treatment will be investigated, to ascertain whether the death was connected with the treatment.

Speaking to reporters today, Dr Ko said all medical treatments have associated risks, and it is necessary for practitioners to communicate with the patient, to ensure the patient understands the process and is fit to undergo the treatment.

As the case must be referred to the Coroner, Dr Ko said it is premature to discuss responsibility for the death.

Speaking on the recent cases of ocular worm infestation, Dr Ko said as the mosquito bites can transmit the infestation, people should take protective measures to avoid mosquito bites.
