The Centre for Food Safety today banned the import of poultry products, including eggs, from the South Holland and Utrecht provinces in the Netherlands.
The decision was made after Dutch authorities announced there was an H5 avian influenza outbreak in South Holland province.
An import ban on poultry meat and products from Oudewater in Utrecht Province was imposed on November 18 because of an avian influenza outbreak there. In view of these developments, the centre decided to extend the ban to the two provinces.
About 18,000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 14.3 million poultry eggs were imported from the Netherlands into Hong Kong last year.
Food safety officials will continue to liaise with Dutch authorities and monitor the situation.
