Alert issued on adenovirus infections

November 20, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection calls on people to stay alert to adenovirus and maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene.

The latest surveillance data showed a recent surge in upper respiratory tract infection caused by adenovirus in the last two weeks, the centre reports.

In the week ending November 15, four upper respiratory tract infection outbreaks caused by adenovirus were recorded, which affected 30 pupils of kindergartens and child care centres, and a primary school. Nine required hospitalisation.

Meanwhile, three outbreaks affecting 42 pupils, with seven requiring hospitalisation, have been reported so far this week. There were at most two outbreaks per week in 2013 and until November 8 this year, the centre noted.

The centre will issue letters to doctors, schools and elderly residential care homes to remind them to take necessary prevention measures and report suspected outbreaks.
