Beef sample fails safety check

November 19, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety has detected illicit preservative sulphur dioxide in a sample of fresh beef during recent safety checks.

It was taken from a Sha Tin Market stall.

It was found to contain sulphur dioxide - a preservative not permitted in fresh meat - at a level of 22 parts per million.

The centre has informed the vendor of the result and will take follow-up tests to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

It reminded traders not to sell fresh or chilled meat containing sulphur dioxide, and encouraged consumers to buy meat from reliable market stalls and fresh provision shops.
