The Centre for Food Safety revealed today that it found sulphur dioxide in a fresh beef sample.
The sample was collected from a fresh provision shop in Mong Kok during a targeted food surveillance project. It was found to contain a sulphur dioxide level of 74 parts per million.
Food safety officials have informed the vendor of the test results and will follow up on the case.
Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods, but it cannot be used for fresh or chilled meat in Hong Kong.
