Man treated for NDM-5

August 29, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection today confirmed a case of NDM-5, or New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-5 Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, in an 18-year-old man.

He fell ill on August 15 and saw a doctor on August 18. He was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital on August 20 and discharged on August 22.

He tested positive for NDM-5.

He had been to a Mainland hospital in June but was not admitted.

His close contacts are asymptomatic.

The centre said proper use of antibiotics and personal hygiene, especially hand hygiene, is important for the prevention of NDM infection.
