The Red Cross announced today it will not take blood donations from people who have recently been in Ebola-affected countries.
These places include Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.
Donations from these people will be deferred for at least four weeks from their departure date from the affected country to ensure blood safety.
Ebola virus disease has an incubation period of two days to three weeks.
The precaution was ordered by the Hospital Authority Expert Panel on Blood & Blood Products Safety, and has been endorsed by the Blood Transfusion Service Governing Committee.
Blood supply will not be affected.
