Woman ill after taking Chinese herbs

August 22, 2014

The Department of Health is investigating the poisoning of a 32-year-old woman who consumed Chinese herbs.

She fell ill on August 14 after consuming a broth made from Chinese herbs, and showed signs of solanaceous alkaloid poisoning, such as dilated pupils, dry mouth, acute urine retention, and an abnormally high heart rate.

She went to Pok Oi Hospital on the same day and was discharged on August 16.

Solanaceous alkaloids were found in her system and in the broth.

The department said solanaceous alkaloids can cause death in severe cases. It has taken samples from the herb retailer Sun Chung Nam Medicine Company in Yuen Long for analysis.
