The Department of Health today launched the first-ever locally developed comprehensive diagnostic instrument for Hong Kong preschool children.
The Comprehensive Assessment Scales for Preschool Children enable accurate assessment of local students who may have developmental problems.
The results will help experts make referrals for treatments, training or educational placements.
The department said local paediatricians and psychologists have been using developmental assessment tools developed overseas for preschool children for the last three decades.
Due to the differences in living environment and culture, the department together with academic scholars developed new assessment tools for local needs, including testing children's Cantonese ability and social cognition.
The department said new assessment scales will be applicable to professionals working in the public sector, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. It will organise training workshops for them in late 2014 or early 2015.
