Local encephalitis case confirmed

August 06, 2014

Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung has called on the public to take preventive measures against mosquitoes, after the year's third local Japanese encephalitis case was confirmed today.

Dr Leung told the media the case involves a 36-year-old man who is in stable condition. He fell ill on August 1 and was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital.

He lives in the quarters of the Crossroads Foundation near the Gold Coast, Tuen Mun, and has no recent travel history. His home contacts are asymptomatic.

The disease is caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Dr Leung said the patient’s neighbours will be interviewed and invited to a talk to learn about the illness and how to prevent it. The centre will notify doctors in Hong Kong to watch for the disease.

Call 2125 1122 for enquiries.
