Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says a public consultation on establishing a code governing marketing and quality of formula milk and baby food was completed, but responses were mixed.
Speaking to reporters today, Dr Ko said the majority of responses received support such a code.
However, the code proposed to prohibit any form of promotion, including advertisements, for infant formula for babies up to 36 months of age, which attracted the formula milk industry's strong opposition, he added.
Dr Ko said he will re-examine the code, taking into account of the stakeholders’ opinion and the development of a recent move to regulate labelling and nutritional requirements for infant formula.
His bureau will report to the Legislative Council Health Services Panel on the consultation results next Monday, he added.
