Health chief touts fruit

March 27, 2014

The Department of Health will celebrate Joyful Fruit Month in April to promote healthy daily eating habits.

Officiating at the kick-off ceremony today, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said more than 50% of adults do not know that two servings of fruit are needed daily, and over 80% do not eat sufficient fruit and vegetables.

He urged more institutions and organisations to promote eating fruit as a regular habit.

The department noted colorectal cancer was the most common cancer in 2011, and adequate intake of fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of this, as well as stomach cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Also officiating at the ceremony today, Ocean Park Chairman Allan Zeman said the park will offer fruit-filled recipes and highlight fruit-loving animals' diets to help promote healthier eating during the month.
