Poultry compensation planned

February 14, 2014

The Government will compensate owners of killed birds with up to $30 for each bird, Secretary for Food and Health Dr Ko Wing-man says.

Dr Ko met today with representatives from the poultry trade to explain compensation plans and the separate holding of local and imported live poultry for avian influenza testing.

He said the Government also proposes compensation ranging from $7,000 to $40,000 to wholesalers, retailers, transport operators and self-employed market workers, in addition to a waiver of one-month rental for stalls, ancillary facilities and vehicle parking spaces.

On the separate holding of local and imported live poultry, he said the Government is looking for an appropriate site but may not be able to finalise arrangements before the poultry wholesale market is reopened on February 19.
