PCV13 booster subsidies planned

November 27, 2013
The Government will subsidise one booster dose through a vaccination subsidy scheme for children aged two to under five years old who have not received the 13-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13).

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man told lawmakers today the programme is set to launch next month, adding implementation details will be announced soon.

While there is sufficient stock of PCV13 vaccine in Hong Kong, more will be sent to Hong Kong next month.

The Government is liaising with the supplier to ensure there is sufficient vaccine to meet demand, he said, adding it will also boost public awareness on the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease and the effectiveness of PCV13.

Dr Ko said the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases and its Working Group on Pneumococcal Vaccination convened a joint meeting on November 25 after two children died of pneumococcal disease.

He said, based on information currently available, members felt that a PCV13 booster dose was not required yet for children under five years old who had received 7-valent or 10-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines.

"Taking into account the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases' view together with concerns across the community and parents, and noting the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases and other experts' views, the Government has decided to subsidise one booster dose through a vaccination subsidy scheme for children aged two to under five years old who have never received PCV13."
