Vaccine coverage weakens as virus evolves

November 23, 2013
Existing vaccines' coverage may become inadequate as viruses and bacteria evolve, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says, adding the Government awaits advice from the expert committee concerning new vaccines' supply.

Speaking to the media after attending a radio programme this morning, Dr Ko said he is concerned after two children died of invasive pneumococcal infection from Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria.

“The experts therein will analyse the available clinical epidemiological data of invasive pneumococcal infection, examine the supply of new vaccines and then make a recommendation to the Government,” he said.

Dr Ko urged people to pay attention to personal hygiene to prevent infection.
