Sarah Lee - Hong Kong’s smiling face

September 22, 2013
The Brand Hong Kong Faces of Hong Kong video series features track cycling world champion and Olympic bronze medallist Sarah Lee. News.gov.hk interviewed the friendly local-born athlete, who always wears a smile, during the making of the video.

The first filming spot was a beach, where Sarah faced harsh competition - not from other cyclists, but the incoming tide. It rose quickly, so that Sarah and the film crew had to rush through the filming.

“Being interviewed in such tense conditions is very exciting. All of us were worrying about getting wet, but it was really fun! I enjoyed everything during the interview here,” she said.

The second filming location was a familiar place for her: the cycling track in Ma On Shan where she has practiced for many years. While donning her Hong Kong team uniform and getting on her bike, Sarah was full of energy. She checked her equipment carefully, just as she would before a competition.

Speed control
To capture exciting shots of Sarah riding at top speed, the production team modified an all-terrain vehicle into a camera truck to follow the cyclist around the cycling track. Even with a motor, it was no easy task for the vehicle to stay on her wheel.

While balancing her speed with the need for the cameraman to capture the best shots, Sarah called on her skills as a racer.

“I needed to control the speed of my bike, just like I do when I show my skills during competition, so they could capture front shots, back shots and wide shots,” she said.

Proud Hong Kong local
Sarah grew up in the Ngau Tau Kok Public Housing Estate, and witnessed many changes in Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong has experienced so much, such as returning to the motherland, and the SARS incident. However, Hong Kong people are hardworking and adaptable, and I believe that they are as hardworking as I am,” she said.

“I was born here in Hong Kong, and I am very proud of it. Every time I go to other countries for competition, I miss Hong Kong more. I always recall some wonderful places in Hong Kong which I have visited, and really want to re-visit them… When I retire in the future, I’ll certainly choose to live in Hong Kong.”
