Mid-East syndrome cases monitored

August 29, 2013
The Department of Health is closely monitoring eight additional cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome reported to the World Health Organization by Saudi Arabia.

The WHO says two of these are fatal cases involving men aged 54 and 51 from Riyadh, who had chronic illnesses.

The remaining three men and three women are aged 31 to 70. Of these, five have underlying medical conditions and are hospitalised.

The other patient, from southern Saudi Arabia, is a contact of a confirmed case and is asymptomatic.

A previously confirmed case from the United Arab Emirates has died.

This brings the latest global number of confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome to 102, including 49 deaths.

No human infection with this virus has been identified so far in Hong Kong.
