2 foods fail safety tests

March 28, 2013
Two samples have failed Centre for Food Safety checks – a Chinese flowering cabbage and a green papaya salad.

Of the 7,100 food samples tested last month, the overall satisfactory rate was 99.97%. About 2,100 samples underwent chemical tests, 700 underwent microbiological testing and the remaining 4,300 were tested for radiation. Samples tested included fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, aquatic products, milk products, frozen confections, cereals, and grains.

One sample of Chinese flowering cabbage was detected to contain the pesticide Carbofuran at 1.3 mg per kg, a level posing no immediate risk, although long-term consumption could damage the nervous system.

One sample of green papaya salad, taken in response to a suspected food poisoning case, was found to contain Salmonella, which can cause gastrointestinal problems.

The centre has traced the sources of the food items, asking vendors concerned to stop selling and dispose of the food. The centre has taken follow-up food samples and issued warning letters, and may prosecute if there is sufficient evidence.
