Arrest made for unregistered pet drugs

December 21, 2012
A 42-year-old saleswoman was arrested in a raid on a pet shop in Wan Chai yesterday for selling unregistered animal drugs.

Officers found two unregistered animal drugs, Heartgard Plus Tablets and Tri-Heart Plus Tablets, both containing the antibiotic ivermectin, inside the pet shop. No Hong Kong pharmaceutical product registration number was found on the product labels.

Heartgard Plus Tablets and Tri-Heart Plus Tablets are used for the prevention of heartworm disease and the treatment of other parasite infections in dogs. They are both prescription drugs and should only be used under a a veterinary surgeon's advice and instructions.

Officers also raided the pet shop's head office in Tsuen Wan where they found another two unregistered animal drugs, Frontline Plus for Dogs and Frontline Plus for Cats. Both products contain fipronil, and are over-the-counter animal drugs indicated for the treatment of fleas and ticks.
