7 foods fail safety checks

November 30, 2012
Seven food samples have failed Centre for Food Safety tests.

Releasing the findings of its October food safety report today, the centre tested 9,900 samples during the month, and the overall satisfactory rate was 99.9%.

Five samples of fresh beef were found to contain the preservative sulphur dioxide. Based on the levels detected, it is unlikely the samples would pose any adverse health effects through normal consumption. However, people allergic to the preservative may have symptoms like breathing difficulty, headache and nausea.

A sample of fried Chinese lettuce with preserved bean curd and shredded chili, and a sample of cold soymilk contained Bacillus cereus which can cause gastrointestinal upsets.

The centre has sent warning letters to the vendors concerned.
